CLIENT NAME:Auckland Council
PROJECT VALUE:$12.5M
LOCATION:Western Springs, Auckland
COMPLETION DATE:September 2020
The largest development in Auckland Zoo's 87-year history, Te Wao Nui spans 4 hectares (1/4 of the zoo) and is home to over 100 New Zealand native plant species and approximately 60 different animal species.
Te Wao Nui (The Living Realm) includes a replica kauri dam, a high-level hardwood boardwalk, a bird keeping facility, aviaries, and several architectural simulated rock, waterfalls, and native landscape areas.
Construction had to be carefully managed to ensure minimal impact on the zoo's residents and day-to-day operations. Maximum care was required to keep zoo visitors safe during construction.
interesting extras
Working in a fully operational zoo creates some interesting challenges:
No vibratory screw piling or rock breaking was allowed, as it was too loud and could disturb the zoo's residents. This is somewhat ironic given the amount of noise the tamarins make in the neighboring South American rainforest...at times we weren't even able to hear ourselves on the phone!
All wood within the aviary (4.7 km of wooden decking) is Vitex hardwood sourced from the Solomon Islands – this is so that the birds cannot pick at any treated wood.
Fake rock within the aviary and pebbles in streams should be smooth to prevent birds from getting blisters.
